5000-Words-per-hour-300x200A couple months back I embarked on the rather ambitious plan to write a non-fiction book (my first), which would launch with a companion iPhone app. The amount of work that went into creating software that would perfectly dovetail with a book was challenging, but very rewarding.

Today both are finally live! You can download the book on either iTunes or Amazon, and the app is available here. I know most people who read my blog are into my fiction, but if you’re a writer give the app and book a look.

They’ve both worked well for the people who’ve tried them so far, and I’m hoping they’ll AppIcon76x76@2xwork for you too! Either way I have to admit I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished.  =)

  • I just finished the book (I pre-ordered it some time ago) and it is now my favorite book on increasing writing productivity. I’d say it was worth the wait but wish I hadn’t had the wait.
I think it is the perfect companion to Take Off Your Pants and 2000 to 10000 and provides exactly the core that those books miss or gloss over. The perfect trifecta.
You can take my money now as soon as you start work on an Android app or a Chrome browser extension I can use on Windows and Linux.
This book deserves to be a best seller.

      • Hi Chris,

Just been finished reading your book. Can’t wait to get started!

Were you able to ever make process with an Android or Windows version of the app?

        Thanks again!

  • Hi Chris,

I love the book 5000wph. I’m finding the info very motivational and exciting. I already use dragon naturally speaking so I loved hearing about your system of using it. Can you email me about the app? I have a few questions. Thanks!

  • I am a fledgling (non-fiction and fiction) writer and my sister, already an author, told me about your book and how the ideas in it changed her thinking and how she’s going to be writing from now on. I read it and am so excited to start my writing career off like this. I got the premium version of your app and I love it.

I just have one question – is there a way to record editing and proofreading sprints with the app? I used the app to record two editing sprints, but now it looks like I type like the wind, which I don’t. Is there way to split out the editing sprints from the writing sprints?

    Thanks!

    • I’m really glad to hear that you’re using the 5k system. What is your book about?

Editing and proofreading sprints are coming in the next build! You’ll be able to change them on existing sprints too, so once that goes live you can fix them =)

      • I write non-fiction articles for a friend’s self help blog. My fiction books are going to be for reluctant middle school readers, some will be at grade level and some will be Hi-Lo books. They are a mix of sci-fi and fantasy since those are my favorite books to read.

I’ll look forward for the next build. Thanks!

      • Hi. Me again. Is there a way to have multiple projects at the same time, and also a way to close out a project. I finished my article but my iPad thinks everything I write is in that project. I just downloaded the app to my phone and will keep my book writing sprints on that device until things can be synced. I want to be able to compare my fiction writing speed with my non-fiction writing speed.

Thanks again for such a helpful book and app!

      • Hi Greta! If you unlock the premium version you can have more than one project. Selecting a project (by clicking on it on the projects tab) will mark it as active, so all sprints will be added to that until you select another sprint.

I haven’t added a way to close out projects, but am considering it. You’re the first person to ask, but it seems like it would be useful.

  • I just bought the app and really like it. I’m having one small issue though. I can use it on either my iPhone or my iPad, but the data doesn’t seem to be syncing between them despite my logging into both versions through Facebook. Is there a fix for this? Or am I doing something wrong?

    • At present the app only stores data locally. One of the features I plan to add will allow data to sync through iCloud, but for now the best solution I can offer is just to manually update the project total if you’re using it between devices =/

  • I am reading the book now (love it!) and have been using your app for the past three days (just started a new project). Using just 10 minute sprints, I’ve already written 2600 words halfway through the third day. This is really good for me as usually I’m happy with 500-1000 words a day. So thank you. I’m spreading the word on Facebook in my writing loops for you.

    • Thank you so much for posting this, Rebecca. It totally makes my day to hear that it’s working for people. I also appreciate you spreading the word =)

  • Hi,
I also would like to chime in with words of praise for the book and app. Concentrating on words per minute has finally allowed me to break away from editing as I write, so thank you.

I realise a number of people are suggesting improvements for the app, but can I also add my voice to the idea of being able to separate out editing from writing, in order to see progress with either separately. It would also be helpful to see daily totals, because I can do several sprints in one day and it would be good to know that my overall wordcount is also improving.

Once again, though, thank you for such a great motivational tool.

    • Hi John,

Editing sprints are the #1 request, and they’re in beta right now. It’s rather complicated to add, but it will be very worth it. Projects now have two phases, writing and editing. Sprints have types to choose from. Hopefully that’s useful, and I’ll get it to the app store as soon as we’re confident it’s stable.

Daily word counts are coming too!

  • I love the book and have downloaded the app for ipad. Is there any way of changing the orientation so that it comes out in landscape or portrait depending on the screen use? I use landscape because my ipad has an integral keyboard and case. Using it in portrait can be a bit of a pickle, lol.

    • That’s definitely something I need to get added. Right now you’re stuck in portrait =p

  • The book 5,000 Words Per Hour is fantastic. I found it motivating and well written. I also purchased the app on my iPod and loooooove it, unfortunately, it’s no longer available on iTunes nor can I transfer it to another device. I hope this gets sorted and is available soon.
Thank you, Chris, for sharing your process.

This book is an easy read and a fantastic tool to get the words on the page. I also love the app or you can use Chris’s free spreadsheet.

  • I’m so stoked! Just started using this method (after listening to the audiobook of this a few times while at work today), and I managed 3000 words! Which is a 2k word improvement on the 1k I was so proud of yesterday. 🙂 And it felt simple when breaking it down into small doable increments. I’m looking forward to seeing how much I can improve! Will definitely be purchasing the premium version of the app next paycheck!

  • Why is the app no longer available on iTunes?

    • I made the reluctant decision to pull it from the store, because it isn’t compatible with iOS 11 and I don’t have time to develop it. I do have a spreadsheet available at chrisfoxwrites.com/resources if you think that might be helpful =)

      • Chris,

Do you have plans to release it again in the future? I love this app. I have an iPhone 7 and my husband just got an iPhone. We were sad that he wasn’t able to download it.

  • I reset my phone and now I can’t get the app back. I’m heartbroken. I’d even paid for premium.

    • I really, really need to be able to re-download the app. I don’t care about iOS 11. It was working on my phone before I had to restore it. I was finally getting in a rhythm and making progress, and now I’m just sitting here crying because I need the app back, paid for premium, and can’t re-download it to my phone.
